You can keep track of which books you read, which you are currently reading, and which you want to read in the future. I've racked up a list of about 35 books that I need to remember to read. That doesn't include all of the books I have sitting around at home that I've yet to open. You can also write reviews and befriend other people with the same interests. I'm currently in the middle of Gothic: Dark Glamour, which coincides with the FIT exhibit of the same name, and the mystery novel City of Shadows. So, what are you reading?

God Save McQueen

March cannot come quick enough! This article has me super excited because Alexander McQueen, a.k.a. the most brilliant designer to walk this planet, is coming out with a line at Target! Everything is going to be under $129.99 so hopefully I can get my hands on a lot of these new items. I wish it was a tad cheaper though, considering I got a Temperley for Target dress for $12.00 last winter. In the spirit of British goodness and fashion royalty, I bring you McQueen's best runway presentations. They're all stunning compared to some other bland runway shows because the models are always all over the runway. Actually... his shows take place on more of a stage than a runway. Presentation is key for McQueen. Not that he needs any help showing off his designs; they're perfect even without a huge spectacle.

I spent some time going through the Accessory Report for Spring 09 RTW on Style.com and I only found about 30 pieces that I actually liked out of about 400. I know that there are plenty of styles other than my own, but come on. Some of these accessories were downright hideous. Especially the shoes. I'm seriously the worst blogger in all the land. I'm on a roll with my updates for a while and then I spiral into a miserable world of AP English/Calc and physical therapy. My apologies for the neglect, dear blog.

At least this time off from blogging has provided me with the opportunity of scouring Vogue/Elle/InStyle/Teen Vogue for new sources of inspiration and amusement. I bring you my favorite things from the latest fall fashion magazines.

The new Cruise adverts for Dolce & Gabbana. The mingling of pink and black is perhaps my favorite color combination ever. I don't mind that these ads lack the usual sex appeal of Dolce & Gabbana because I'm not one for showing too much skin anyway. I'm way more of a Charlotte than a Samantha.

The Legend of Leggings

Here's the latest article that I wrote for the school paper. It's not my best work but it's still good advice.

You can walk down the halls of our school on any given day and see countless girls wearing the tight cotton-and-spandex creation known as leggings. During the Renaissance period, wool leggings were worn by both men and women for protection and warmth. Obviously men no longer follow that trend. Modern girls don’t need leggings for protection, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be styled properly.
There are a few unspoken rules that fans of leggings should follow. First of all, only wear them with tunics, skirts, or dresses. Wearing a pair with a shorter top puts you at risk of looking like an eighties aerobics instructor. The next rule applies to anyone with short legs. Since tights or leggings that cut off at the ankle give legs a slightly shorter appearance, you should try a pair that extends to the toe instead. The best shoes to wear with leggings are flats because heels also give off an eighties vibe.
It’s time to move beyond the basic black of last year’s leggings and onto bolder styles. Red, purple, and white leggings were seen in many recent runway shows. Patterned leggings also look great under a monotone dress. To make an even greater statement, try leggings with cut-outs, zippers, shine. Just make sure you don’t go crazy with these designs because there is a fine line between a stylish outfit and a Halloween costume. Lindsay Lohan’s new line of leggings, named 6126 for Marilyn Monroe’s birthday, is a bit overpriced, but cheaper styles can be found at stores like Target. American Apparel’s shiny leggings are perfect for nighttime, but wear softer colors during the day. If you stick with these guidelines you can make leggings look 2008 instead of 1988.

Style Report: Jewelry

So, I've never owned any legitimate jewelry but a girl can dream. Here are some of my favorite pieces at the moment.

De Grisogono: This necklace is the perfect mixture of structured jewels and fluidity. The pendant is practically dripping off of the rest of the necklace. I love black and blue together, as well.

Chanel: I saw the ring directly below for the first time today and I was stunned. It's a rather eccentric choice for fine jewelry but I think its beautiful because it's so different. The second ring has been plastered on my bedroom wall for a while now because I think it's one of the most beautiful rings I've ever seen.

Roberto Coin: This jewelry is genius. The colors are so lively, yet classy. The gift-shaped pendants are the perfect literal gifts for the upcoming holiday season and the circular black pendants would match anything. I love all of the animal inspiration, but my favorite is the use of snakes. The pink snake ring has a crazy texture that you don't usually find with rings. Finally, I think the lock necklaces are a great gift for a significant other (aw!).

To Kill Or Not To Kill

The question of genuine fur/leather versus its faux counterpart is showing up a lot this fall. Personally, I'm a vegetarian and am against killing animals for humans to wear them. That doesn't mean I don't like the look of a sleek leather jacket or the warmth of a furry shrug. I just don't believe that we need to skin animals for these luxuries. There are plenty of amazing faux versions that are kinder and far cheaper. H&M usually has great faux-leather jackets and I'm sure you could find faux-fur at any major department store. Fur-like jackets, coats, and shrugs are actually a great way to stay warm during winter without looking dowdy.

Lately, I've been questioning the sweater vest. As Demetri Martin would say, "leave me alone, can't you see I'm cold just right here!". Obviouly the sweater vest doesn't provide much of anything except some added style and polish. I'm always up for trying new styles (with the exception of Ugg-ly boots), so I'm thinking about trying a sweater vest with a Hanes v-neck underneath. I've narrowed my search down to two choices. Which one's better?

I'm leaning towards the pullover in yellow.

Dos:

When I was younger, I would have eaten my own leg to meet the Olsen twins. I still like them, though not as much. I've heard mixed reviews about the book and that it doesn't have much content or display any talent. Either way it's interesting to have a tribute to the Olsen twins, who have influenced so many people, in a book about who has influenced them. And I like Ashley's cover better.

Sorry for the lack of updates as of late. I promise to update regularly once again. I won't, however, be posting "what I wore" pictures on a daily basis because my wonky ankle puts a damper on things. It's a little feeling better, but it still looks bad.

College applications are all done! The stress of applying is over, but now I'm left worrying about acceptances. I already got one acceptance letter, though!

Trends I Love/ Things I Want:

Mary Poppins-esque gloves. Most of the sleek winter gloves that I've come across are expensive and made of leather. That really doesn't work for me considering I'm against wearing leather and I don't have $50 to spend on a pair of gloves. I did manage to find a purple synthetic pair with a gold button for $8 so of course I added that to my Christmas list.

Sweaterdresses, which are also on the list. I picked out a few really cute sweaterdresses from H&M and I wish I could wear them write now. There's a very British gray dress that I liked, and there was a navy blue knit wrap dress that I loved on the hanger but not on my body.

Gold charm bracelets. I only have one at the moment, but I wish I could find some more unique ones.

The Chanel inspired jacket that I saw at the mall. Again, it's going to be a Christmas gift. I wanted to invest in a nice, simple blazer but I knew that I would enjoy wearing a tweed jacket so much more.

These Coach shoes. Their ad with the striped tights is so deliciously Alice in Wonderland. If only they weren't leather. A store like Target needs to come out with a similar style immediately.

Currently Listening To: The new Keane album Perfect Symmetry and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve and Other Stories (it is never too early to listen to holiday tunes).

Currently Watching: Little Britain, Stylista (although I don't quite know if I like it yet), and Pushing Daisies (which cannot get cancelled because it is the most creative show ever!)

Currently Reading: Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Many people would be astonished if I told them I was reader a Wharton novel after we read Ethan Frome in English last year, but this book is so good. I'm only about 50 pages into it but I love it. It captures New York City in the late 1800s and it's actually quite witty. Plus, I can imagine how elaborate and amazing the women looked back then.

John Galliano: Now that's what I call the the colors of spring! Pastel green and pink. Not crazy about the big poodle hair thing, though.

Elie Saab: Even though I only chose five looks from this collection, the looks that I chose are some of my favorites from all of the Spring 09 RTW shows. They are so deliciously feminine and elegant.

Alexander McQueen: It pains me to say that my favorite designer at the moment didn't awe me this season. I guess I was expecting a lot after Fall 08 RTW, which is quite possibly my favorite collection ever. Of course McQueen's looks were pretty and pretty crazy. I was just hoping for something more.

It's kind of hard to really see the dress in this picture, but I just love it so much. The cut-outs on the shoulder provide some decent exposure. The cut of the dress itself would be flattering on anyone (trust me). I paired it with purple opaque tights from Bon Ton (they ended up being the same color as the dress!) and my silver Forever 21 flats that I practically live in. Purple is my new favorite color.

Quick ProjRun Opinion

I've been torn about my favorites all season. In the beginning, I loved Kenley and her 50s flare. Her attitude became a huge problem later on, but I must say that after seeing bits of her fashion week collection she is probably my ultimate favorite. She may only make 40s-50s inspired pieces, but she's amazing at it. I loved Leanne too, but I did not like her wedding dress. Oh, and Kenley is obviously loving sir Alexander McQueen. The second I saw her wedding dress during Tim's visit I shouted "MCQUEEN!" (that dress of his is one of my favorites). I don't know if I should be excited that she draws inspiration from one of my favorite designers, or if I should be appalled that she would copy such a masterpiece. Either way, I would totally wear that dress.

I know, I know, I know. I haven't been posting as regularly as I'd hoped. However, taking AP classes and preparing for surgery tomorrow (eek!) is very stressful. Expect updates via bedrest laptop this weekend.

Paris Fashion Week Pt. 1: Balmain, Gareth Pugh, Nina Ricci, Christian Dior

Christian Dior: I enjoyed this collection, but not as much as I enjoy Dior couture. I'm not sure why I liked these looks, but they just strike me as beautiful.

Nina Ricci: Olivier Theyskens knows glamour! These dresses were all so unexpected, enthralling, and new. It would take serious confidence to pull these off.

Above: The bright orange coat was a shock in this line, but it works with the dress.
Above: Clearly, Theyskens is a fan of the asymmetrical hem (which is quite ubiquitous this season).

Gareth Pugh: Hmm.. a little similar to the Moschino line, eh?

Balmain: Oh, how I love Balmain. The very essence of rocker chic. Everything that Balmain creates is so loud and rough, but it's still pretty. I want to be a rock star just so I can wear these clothes.

Pollini: I love the flouncy skirts, but the sheer has got to go. The patterns would be 100 times better on opaque materials.

Luisa Beccaria: This collection is very traditionally romantic and sweet. While I wish that there was a greater variety with pattern, the ruffles and silhouettes were so cute. AGAIN: the sheers are not working.

Above: I don't mind the sheerness of the bottom of this dress. It has a certain angelic, surreal quality.

Above: My favorite.

La Perla: I love the layering of the lace! I think its a fabulous idea that incorporates the delicate fabric that is lace without going overboard.

Gucci: I'm not a huge fan of the direction that Gucci took this season, but these looks stood out to me.

Dolce & Gabbana: They played with the whole men's-pajamas-as-clothes idea, which I previously mentioned that I wanted to try. I hate when people wear actual pajamas to school and such, but clothing inspired by class pajama styles is fine by me.

Alessandro Dell'Acqua: The only fringe that I like! Plus the sheer sleeve is awesome.

Moschino: One of my favorite collections from "Fashion Month" as I prefer to call it. This line has a quirky side (inspiration from a court jester?) which I really like, but it doesn't look too costume-y or childish.

Milan Fashion Week Pt. 1: Just Cavalli, Burberry Prorsum, D&G, Blumarine

Blumarine: The name says it all. Many of the looks were in marine blues and greens, but those light colors work well for spring.

Above: Favorite. I think it would make a nice red carpet dress and as the eye travels from the neck down, the design along the leg is surprising.

D&G: They went full steam ahead with the nautical theme. While these looks are cute, I wouldn't want to own all of them and look like a little wanna-be sailor. Wearing one nautical piece at a time is enough.

Above: The bottom is very interesting.

Burberry Prorsum: It pains me to say that Burberry wasn't my favorite this season. The clothes were different and innovative as always, but they weren't really style. First of all, the colors and silhouettes used remind me of fall as opposed to spring. The clothes are too slouchy for my liking, but I could see myself wearing some of these pieces in the winter when I want to be comfortable.

What I Wore Today:

I went to TJ Maxx for the first time last weekend. I always thought it was kind of a scam and that it wouldn't have anything nice, but I was pretty happy with it! I bought a purse for about half of what it would normally cost and I found a purple dress and some cute shoes. My mom needed a new purse and she got a legitimate Tommy Hilfiger bag for $20. It's so nice, I'm pretty jealous.

Above: I love the cut-out on the shoulders. The dress covers straps that you would like to keep hidden, while still exposing the shoulder. Good idea!

Above: This is one of my favorite bags that I ever bought. It's so perfect for me. However, it's not really that orange looking; my peach walls affect how items photograph.

My homecoming dance was on Saturday, but all of the pictures I took of my dress came out horribly. I wore the above peep-toe flats (because I can't wear heels with my ankle injury) and the below dress from Target.

Wanted: Cute faux-leather gloves (a la Mad Men/Mary Poppins) to go with my new coat. I have big fuzzy gloves and mittens but I want a sleeker look this winter.

Looking Forward To: The Jonathan Saunders collection for Target (mod tunic dresses galore!)

Absolutely Hating: FRINGE. It's in all of the current magazines as a new trend, but I think it looks so messy. Maybe a little big of fringe here and there is alright, but I don't want boots that look like a shaggy dog.

Hoping: That chunky heels will soon replace stilettos in the forefront of fashion. I could possibly wear heels in the future if they weren't so thin and pointed. A thicker heel still looks nice, and it provides more support for the ankle :]

Loving: Vests over long-sleeved dresses, Burberry Prorsum floral dresses, enamel crest pendants, suede and feather clutches by R&Y Augousti, John Galliano rings, and pairing a blazer with a men's pajama shirt (I must try this!)

I loved the fashion spread on the major couture houses in this month's Vogue. My favorite couture designer at this point is Christian Lacroix, and I would die if I could wear either of these creations below.

Fifties Finds

It is Spirit Week in my school, so that explains the lack of "What I Wore" updates. I'm finding it hard to look perfect, yet participate in themes like "pajama day" and "sports day". I'll let having school spirit "cramp my style" for the week.

The other day, I was telling my mom about the fifties fashions that I wish were still around. She dug up a box of keepsakes from the attic that belonged to her mother in the 1940s/1950s. There were two pieces that I loved and decided to share.

These two pictures are of a light blue and white faux pearl necklace from the 1950s. I love the simple style, but there is something about the shape and the tie in the back that makes it unique.

This was a veiled hat from the same time period. I'm sure there's a more specific name for it, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. I've always wanted to wear something like this so I could peer out from under the netting like women did in old movies. I tried it on, but I think my head is a little too large for it. I'll have to continue my search for more vintage goods.

Temperley London: Alice Temperley is one of my favorite designers of all time because she always combines all of the elements of fashion that I love. This season was no exception. It has black and white, pops of gorgeous bright colors, animal print, Victorian influences, lace, structured pieces, and gently draped pieces to balance it out. LOVE! One of my favorite dresses is from the Temperley for Target collection.

I got a few gifts on my actual birthday, but the main portion of gift was shopping on Saturday. I didn't spend nearly as much money as I had though (which is a good thing economically, but a bad thing closet-wise). As I said before, I received the Daisy by Marc Jacobs perfume as well as the book Gothic: Dark Glamour by Valerie Steele and Jennifer Park. From friends I received a calendar with the theme of The Office (new season begins this Thursday!) and a Burberry headband. I also bought my Homecoming Dress for this coming weekend, but I'm saving pictures of that for when I actually wear it.

Charles Nolan: He has now become one of my favorite spring designers. This collection was beautiful and apparently some of the inspiration came from Daisy Buchanan of The Greaty Gatsby (which I just read).

New York Fashion Week just began and so far I've only seen pictures from 4 shows: Elie Tahari, Rachel Roy, Sue Stemp, and Trovata. I must say, I'm not too impressed with what I've seen. I liked a few things from the first three collections but Trovata left a lot to be desired for me. Here were my favorites.

...according to Vogue's September issue. I don't know that I'd replace my ballet flats with these shoes, but I definitely want a pair. They're cute and they fit in with the whole masculine-goes-feminine look.
I went to another mall yesterday and I was disappointed at how trashy most stores are getting. Maybe it was just the mall. I did manage to find a couple of new accessories at Forever 21 and some new clothes (with sweet deals worth mentioning) from New York & Company.

Above: There were tons of shirts like this one on sale for 50% at NY&C. I love button-down shirts but I usually can't get them to fit in the right places. This one was made from strech fabric so it fit nicely across the chest. Universally flattering!

Above: I'm sorry that these pictures all came out really bad. However, there's not much to say about this piece. Its a lovely green sweater with flared sleeves, which I quite like.

Above: I loved the print on this cardigan. You usually can't go wrong with combining pink and black and the print reminds me of eery branches when the leaves fall off of the trees.

Above: This picture is a bit hard to see, but its a watch I bought at Forever 21. I thought it was just a brown and gold cuff when I first picked it up, but then I realized that there was a gold-faced watch inside! Very neat.

Above: I was looking for new sunglasses after I broke a pair of mine in Florida. These beauties were only $5 and they are the perfect sunglasses for me. Very Mad Men :)

Thoughts:

Why does it have to be so hard to find affordable, flat boots. I have two pairs in gray and black but I really want flat brown boots for fall. I couldn't find any under $100 in stores. I found a pair that I really like for $40 online but I'm a bit hesitant about ordering shoes online because they tend to not fit me.
I also can't decide which perfume I want to buy next. I'm thinking about Daisy by Marc Jacobs. I've loved it ever since I first smelled it last year.
Am I the only person that thinks putting pailettes all over pants, dresses, and blouses is a terrible idea? It reminds me of the tacky purses that they used to sell all over the city when I was in middle school.

The sole purpose of this post is to display some of my favorite shots from fashion editorials as of late. It was hard to pick and I have thousands of editorial shots saved on my computer. The following is simply a handful that struck me at the moment.

The above photo looks like a scene from a movie. Its roughly 60 years old but its still beautiful. I wish women still wore gowns like that on a more regular basis. Gorgeous!

Please, please, please check out THIS EDITORIAL. Its by Eugenio Recuenco, one of my favorites, and the concept is brilliant. Something about these photos is creepily beautiful and amusing.

Currently Listening To: Sam Sparro. "Black and Gold" has been one of my favorite songs for a couple months now and I finally got around to downloading his entire album. He's definitely worth listening to because of the fun electronic beats and his sometimes-soul-inspired voice. The lyrics are cute too, which is a plus.

Currently Watching: Mad Men. Still. I can't get enough of this show. I agree with Michael Kors 100%. Its the most fashionable show on television and its just as enthralling.

Yesterday I went to the mall for Back-to-School Shopping: Part 1. I hit up Ulta first and bought various necessities, including one of the new OPI nail polish shades, "Parlez Vous OPI?", which has been deemed one of the best shades for fall. Its light purple and I'm excited to use it because I always love OPI. I'm currently wearing "Russian Navy" which is probably the greatest shade of all time.

I found the majority of my purchases at H&M, with some jewelry courtesy of Target. Target has some really cute heels out now and I wish I could wear them :(

Here are some of my purchases. I didn't include them all because the rest of the pieces are pretty plain, such as a teal short-sleeved turtleneck and a cream lightweight turtleneck for layering. I'm super pumped to wear the gray belted dress. Its one of my favorite purchases ever (and very reasonably priced). I was also going to buy a new coat since I tragically lost mine last winter to a pair of hospital sheers. Yet, there aren't many nice coats out yet so I'll have to wait until a later month...like October. I keep forgetting its still August. Enough rambling...onto the pictures! The last picture was taken yesterday before my mom's birthday dinner. It was casual, but I picked a shirt with a jeweled neckline so that I didn't have to wear a necklace.

I'm back from vacation with a less than pleasant sunburn. Tanlines aren't the accessories I was hoping for in my senior picture next week. Its pretty hard to stay stylish in the heat of Florida, but here's an attempt of mine.

This is a terrible picture of me, but its the best I can do.

I'm super excited to go back-to-school shopping this week. I'm just planning on going to a few select stores (Forever 21, H&M, Target and PacSun). H&M is probably my favorite place to be in the entire world and Forever 21 always has very cheap and very stylish pieces. Target is great for cheap handbags, such as the Faux-Croc Mossimo bag that I have my eye on for this fall. PacSun seems a bit out of place in the list but their Bullshead Denim jeans are perfect me. They're on the cheap side for jeans and they always seem to fit me perfectly. In the fall they usually have 2for$50 deals.

The trends that I'm into this fall are zebra and leopard prints, faux leather, faux croc, tartan prints, 50s silhouettes, and double breasted military jackets (I seriously need one!)

My favorite designer of Fall 08 is Alexander McQueen, without a doubt. He's always fantastic and it is clear where Project Runway's Christian Siriano gets his inspiration from. The McQueen clutch below is quite possibly the most fitting bag for me that I've ever seen.

I'm also ogling Burberry Prorsum this season, as always. Christopher Bailey is a fashion genius and the spiked clutches and jewelery of Fall 08 are to die for. As are the pants below which I would probably eat my own arm for. I love how the material looks and the tailoring is perfect.

Before I went on vacation, I checked out a bunch of the prominent Resort 09 collections. Chanel was pretty as always, but I thought Badgley Mischka's collection was perfect. The color palette was really fun and the designs are the epitome of resort.

Currently Watching: Mad Men on AMC. I decided to start watching it after hearing all of the hype about season 2. It really is a fantastic show. The actors are skilled and they fit so effortlessly into the time period (the 60s, aka one of my favorite eras). I wish I could own everything in that show's costume department. The silhouettes of the 50s and 60s housewives are starting to come back, but I need to see even more of them. They are so flattering on real people who aren't stick thin. Its pretty funny to hear how the men talked to women back then. We females have come a long way in the last 50 years.

I recently bought three new pairs of shoes (flats, of course) and I'm excited to break them in. Two pairs are simply colored satin, but I'm obsessing over my perfectly-titled "Twiggy" flats (below: Forever21).

After seeing this three-buckled belt look on the runway so many times, I decided that I needed to try it for myself. GOOD CHOICE. I love cinching things at the waist and this is a great way to do it (below right: Forever 21).

I kinda wish I worked in an office right now so I could try to get away with looks like this. It would be a sure way to catch the eye of a "Jim Halpert" type. I love the wine red and the black together. However, I would ditch the fishnets. That's a little much with the whole faux-corset top and all.

I would make an exception to my flats rule with the following shoes. I would kill for these. Seriously, Christopher Bailey can do no wrong.

And finally, the top to this ensemble is utterly beautiful and I would love to find something like this. Note to self: acquire as many off-the-shoulder pieces as possible in the future.

Currently Reading: Still working on Lolita, but I've requested Stop in the Name of Pants from the library because the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series is by far the funniest thing I've ever read. It really has nothing to do with fashion, but the tale of a British teenager on the "rack of love" is irresistible.

Currently Listening: The newest Girl Talk album "Feed the Animals" is HOT.

Back to finishing Sex and the City Season 2. Yeahhh I saw the end of the series before the beginning. Its still juicy. Ciao! x

A significant portion of my day was spent reading Lolita, a novel that I expected to be a bit repulsive. Surprisingly, I find it hilarious and charming...which might say something about my character. I'm roughly half-way through this book and I have a feeling that Dolores will outgrow the Lolita image and Humbert will have to find a new nymphet to prey upon. Perhaps a new step-daughter. We'll see how this goes.

So as the title of this post suggests, I'm awaiting September. I'm not so excited for school to start but NY Fashion Week for Spring 2009 is being held from September 5-12. Its going to be interesting to see these runway looks because spring 2009 is going to be big (AKA when I graduate high school). Also, my birthday is in September so that's fun. Not to mention, there's a little letter that I am very nervous about receiving on September 15th.

LEFT: The coat I wish I so desperately had. Its not the Burberry trench that I pine after, but its gorgeous nonetheless. I'm not sure how well I could maintain anything that white but man does it look amazing against the background of dreary rain. Perfect, perfect, perfect coat for traipsing around London (which I plan on doing in about 2 years).

I've also been packing for my upcoming trip to Florida. I forgot how stressful packing is and I wish I had the following swimsuit to brighten up my mood.

I'm going into my senior year in high school and I'm applying to FIT this fall (crossing my fingers!). I don't own any designer clothing, but I want my first splurge to be a Burberry trench. While I love the way heels look, I am definitely not a fan of wearing them and would rather wear cute flats any day. My dream is to live in New York City, to attend fashion week whenever possible, and to live like one of the Sex and the City women (favorably Charlotte!) minus the whole desperate search for a man. My favorite band is Monty Are I and they the best live. Project Runway is definitely the best show on T.V. regarding fashion, but The Office is officially the greatest show ever. Period. I also read more than any normal teenager probably should.
